OAPT 2023 Public Finance Officers Training: A Few Takeaways From a Presenter

Shareholder Sara Costanzo recently attended and spoke at the Ohio Association of Public Treasurers (OAPT) Public Finance Officers Training in Sandusky, OH. She discussed improving communication and public relations skills in the industry.

Now, Sara is sharing some takeaways from this interactive and informative event!

  1. Choosing the right mode, form, or method of communication is key to reaching the audience, it is not a one size fits all option. Whether the message is urgent, whether it contains numerous details, and whether the recipient(s) utilize the delivery method (email or text) are just a few considerations when determining how to communicate.
  2. AI and ChatGPT are hot topics, but not necessarily the best option for local governments.  Personal dialog matters. Many people have been pulled into automated chats, normally when using an online help tool. However, most agree that the experience isn’t positive, and prefer to speak directly with someone. With small communities, direct human contact builds transparency and trust.
  3. During the session with Stacie Massey from the Ohio Office of Budget and Management, a question came up regarding a school safety grant. In a follow-up, she advised the group, "The Ohio Attorney General’s office still has a school safety grant. I know there was an ask during the session. I’m sharing the information if you wish to share it with those that attended the session. Here is the link to the funding opportunity on our website: Ohio Grants.” This was great intel and much appreciated by the attendees!
