There was never any doubt in Scott’s mind that one day he would become an attorney – as his father and grandfather did before him. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California, then enrolled in law school shortly thereafter. After achieving his juris doctorate, he returned to Ohio and joined the firm to work alongside his father and mentor, Bob Weltman. Scott became a shareholder in 1996, was elected managing shareholder in 2012, and celebrated 30 years with the firm in 2022. His term of managing partner concluded in 2021 and he returned back to practicing law full-time. Scott has been influential in the growth of Weltman’s business units and services. In the early ’90s, Scott helped to develop the firm’s Probate Recovery practice area. He returned to his position as chair of the Probate Recovery Group in 2021, where he leads Weltman’s probate litigation and defense services.
As a collections litigator, he handles matters involving commercial, consumer, and probate collections. Working hand-in-hand with businesses owners, COO’s, CFO’s, recovery managers, and collection managers, he aims to recover unpaid B2B receivables, commercial loans, complex debts, and outstanding estate claims, with the goal to obtain the best possible outcome for his client.
When Scott takes on a case, he doesn’t just “push paper” – he gets invested. He recollects a case where his client’s employee was caught embezzling several hundred thousand dollars. The employee was arrested and the police seized a large number of assets that were purchased with the stolen money, including TV’s, airline tickets, sports tickets, and traveler’s checks. The assets were tied up in police custody, but Scott filed a suit with the court requesting access so the assets could be liquidated. The court granted his request, and Scott was able to recover a sizeable amount of money for his client.
Scott resides in a suburb of Cleveland with his wife of nearly 30 years. Together they have three children. As a huge sports fan, he enjoys watching and attending just about any type of sporting event – especially college football and Guardians baseball. He also enjoys traveling and working out at his local gym.
